After finishing up our first full week of school, most students are adapting to routines and procedures. It is important for young children to have structure throughout their day so they can know what comes next and can establish independence. Watching these six and seven year olds listen, learn, and get to know their classmates has been just delightful!
Our listening and speaking standard focus has been following directions, quickly & quietly completing tasks with urgency, and taking turns when speaking. Please review the importance of these skills with your child. We will continue to work on them throughout the school year.
Mathematicians reviewed beginning skills like counting by twos, fives, and tens, using the number line to find the number before or after a given number, and began learned a song called the Math Hand-Jive. We also made a paper penny with a silhouette of our 16th president Abe Lincoln. Students also using the year we were born to mark the date their penny was "minted"
We continue to share favorite books that students brought from home and learned three ways to read a book: read the pictures, read the words, and retell the story. You can help your child at home by encouraging them to use these strategies when reading.
In writing we are focusing on telling our story through details in our picture, using letters and words to label, and sounding words out to spell them.
This week we will begin practicing word wall words in several ways. These are mostly non-phonetic words that students need to read, spell, and use in their writing. Students will practice these words for two weeks and then we will take our first word check on September 6th. Click this here or find the words listed on the First Grade Word Wall link at the top of this page.
Students have snack every day in class and sometimes we have a snack after returning from our activities on Friday. If you would like to donate some snacks (crackers, carrots, string cheese etc.) for our classroom pantry it would be much appreciated.
