First grade will be traveling to Calypso Farms September 2nd the bus will leave Barnette at 11:30 pm and return around 2:00 pm. Please let me know if you are available to join our class, volunteers are always welcome.
After finishing up our first week of school, most students are adapting to routines and procedures. It is important for young children to have structure throughout their day so they can know what comes next and establish independence. Watching new students listen, learn, and get to know their classmates has been just delightful!
Our listening and speaking standard focus has been following directions, quickly & quietly completing tasks with urgency, and taking turn when speaking. Please review the importance of these skills with your child. We will continue to work on them throughout the school year.
Mathematicians reviewed "what comes next" & "what comes before", using the number chart & number line to count, and learned a song called the Math Hand-Jive.
We continue to share favorite books that students brought from home. We left on Friday afternoon half way through Virginia Wolf, an exciting tale about helping someone you love when they are feeling a bit "wolfish". We practiced three ways to read a book read the pictures, read the words, and retell the story. You can help your child at home by encouraging using these strategies when reading.
In writing we are focusing on telling our story through details in our picture, using letters we know to make words, and sounding words out to spell them. We also practiced word wall words by writing them and the "raise the roof" cheer.
Thanks you for sending your child to school happy, healthy, and ready to learn.
