Asking amazing questions and using interview skills, students found out more about their teacher, Mrs. Foshee under the careful guidance to District Literacy Coach Molly Sherman. Each week a students will be chosen for this "Second Grade Spotlight" which requires students to ask good questions, sketch the person, and write sentences, in order to get to know their classmates better and practice literacy standards. The class got their first homework assignment on Friday after we carefully went over the directions in class. Homework folders are due back by September 2nd, Wednesday. Several scholastic book orders were also included in the folder, if you would like to order books for your child, just click on the Scholastic link to the right of this page and it will take you to our classroom order page. If you would rather fill out the paper form, it can be turned in with the homework folder. Each dollar you spend gives the class points which helps us add books to our classroom library. Thank you to our classroom volunteers Mrs. Hafele and Mrs. O'Bryan who made it possible for us to take a spelling inventory, make our "wrinkled heart" handprints, and do some one-on-one reading. We introduced our reading Cafe' this week. The class learned that good readers use a variety of strategies to help them become better readers. "Check for Understanding" and "Cross Check-Double Check" were both introduced and discussed. Together we continued reading Leroy Ninker Saddles Up by Kate DiCamillo. Leroy is such a great character and we are all just dying to find out what happens with his horse! After reading the book Pigsty by Mark Teague and "focusing our binoculars" to include good details, students began to write and describe their rooms. We will continue this assignment on Monday. In math we took our first test on "Parts of the Whole". Students will begin Topic 1: Understanding Addition and Subtraction on Monday. Some math vocabulary we will be using during this topic includes: sum, addition sentence, join, subtract, difference, subtraction sentence, separate, more, fewer, and fact family. | "Second Grade Spotlight"Above-Mrs. Foshee with author Peter Reynolds at a literacy conference. (Interview by Room 167 Classmates) A good pet for Mrs. Foshee would be a Jack Russell Terrier. She thinks a smaller, inside dog would be great for her family. Her favorite food is Thai food, Red Curry Halibut. She likes spicy food! Mrs. Foshee gives her friends and people who need care yummy food. Harbor Seals are the sea mammals she admires. |
